14 Ways Med Spas Can Increase Sales Using Gift Cards

Gift cards have long been a go-to marketing tactic to increase sales, particularly within the health and wellness industry, because their impact is twofold.

  1. Gift certificates increase brand awareness and encourage brand advocacy. When a regular client buys a gift card for a loved one, they effectively announce that they stand behind your business. This endorsement can be incredibly effective as people are 90% more likely to trust a brand recommended by someone they know.
  1. Gift cards encourage additional spending, whether because the card doesn’t cover the full amount of their desired service or they want to purchase add-on treatments. According to the National Retail Federation Gift Card Spending Survey, an impressive 65% of gift card holders spend an additional 38% beyond the card’s face value.

With that in mind, if you want to increase sales in your med spa, here are 14 gift card and promo code strategies to consider.

1. Run promotional gift card offers

Limited-time promotional gift card offers create a sense of urgency and encourage immediate purchases, making them effective ways to increase sales quickly. Consider offering an incremental promotion to incentivize higher-value purchases too, e.g.

  • Buy a $50 gift card and get an extra $10
  • Buy a $100 gift card and get an extra $25
  • Buy a $200 gift card and get an extra $60

2. Create gift card and promotional bundles

Bundling gift cards or promotional discounts with specific products or services is another effective way for med spas to increase sales. Consider combining these offers with packages of appointments to encourage repeat visits while you’re at it.

Examples include

  • A free gift card when a customer purchases a pack of appointments, e.g., a ten-pack of laser hair removal treatments
  • A 20% discount on your med spa’s product range when a customer books a high-value service

3. Launch a loyalty program

If your medical spa has a loyalty program, gift cards are an easy way to pass on rewards to customers after they hit the specified milestone, e.g., ten visits or $X amount spent in a year.

If your med spa doesn’t have a loyalty program, now’s the time to start one. More than 60% of Millennial and Gen Z consumers won’t commit to a brand that doesn’t offer loyalty benefits. Considering these generations are some of the most prominent advocates for self-care (not to mention big consumers of medical cosmetic procedures), it would be wise to do everything you can to attract and retain their business.

4. Incentivize employees to sell gift cards

If you’re finding that gift card sales have been slow, consider incentivizing employees to promote them by offering rewards and bonuses for reaching sales goals. Rewards could be anything from a one-off PTO day to free treatments or a gift card to their favorite restaurant.

5. Offer seasonal themes and promotions

Gift certificate sales peak around the holidays because they make a great last-minute gift and are perfect for the difficult-to-buy-for person on your list. Med spas can capitalize on this increased interest by running seasonal promotions and repackaging gift cards in holiday themes.

Examples of seasonal promotions include

  • Discounted gift cards, e.g., buy a $100 gift card, get an extra $50
  • A New Year renewal bundle of treatments to be booked during January
  • Festive spa day vouchers

6. Advertise via your mailing list

Email marketing is up to 40 times more effective than social media. Utilize your med spa’s email list to send targeted campaigns promoting your gift cards to increase sales

Additionally, consider sending clients an end-of-year promo code for their most-booked service to reward their loyalty and encourage repeat bookings. (You could also send the code on the client’s birthday or anniversary of their first visit if December is a particularly busy time for your med spa.)

7. Run social media campaigns

Even though email has a higher ROI, if your med spa has an Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok page, don’t forget to advertise your gift certificates or limited-time promo codes there, too.

Tip: Use different codes for social media vs. email to track the attribution to determine which channel is most effective for your business.

8. Create in-store displays

If you have a physical clinic (rather than just offering in-home med spa services), consider creating an eye-catching display for your gift cards near the front desk and place signs advertising them in the waiting room so your clients can see them.

9. Run gift card contests and giveaways

Another effective way to increase sales for your med spa (while simultaneously boosting your social media following) is to run contests and giveaways where clients can enter to win gift cards. This tactic not only increases engagement and boosts awareness about your gift cards but, as we covered earlier, can lead to additional spending at your medical spa, too.

10. Create virtual gift cards for last-minute shoppers

Offering virtual gift cards enables you to capture sales from people who can’t come into your med spa in person (e.g., out-of-town relatives) and anyone shopping last minute who doesn’t have the time to drop by.

As an added benefit, you’ll also get the recipient's contact information, enabling you to send targeted promotional emails later.

If you’re not confident in your graphic design skills, Canva has some great free templates you can customize with your spa’s branding.

11. Introduce special redemption offers during quiet periods

If January is particularly slow for your med spa, or sales drop during August, launch special redemption offers to encourage customers to book during that time. For example, you could offer a free gift when clients redeem their gift card in full during the month or special discounts on select services to incentivize sales.

12. Launch introductory promo codes

If you want to increase sales from first-time clients in your med spa, consider launching an introductory offer or promotional code. Introductory offers are effective because they reduce the financial commitment for first-time clients and are especially effective if your medical spa doesn’t have many reviews that speak to the quality of your services.

Introductory offers could include:

  • Free $20 gift card with your first service
  • 20% off your first booking

Whichever marketing tactic you choose, remember to track the success of your gift card promotions to understand what works best for your customer base and adjust your strategy accordingly.
